At Floor Coverings International Dakota County, we love hardwood floors. Not only do they add warmth and classic design to your space, they are very durable and can increase your home’s value. If you are considering hardwood floors and want to take your home’s design to the next level, parquet floors might be the choice for you!
What Are Parquet Floors?
As opposed to hardwood planks installed in a straight lay pattern, parquet refers to solid hardwood planks cut into small pieces that are then laid in a pattern, such as chevron or herringbone. Parquet has been around for centuries and was a common favorite among European royalty and American icons alike, including Thomas Jefferson, who created the Monticello design for the floors in his stunning Virginia residence.
Design and Applications
Today, parquet is often seen installed in a beautiful herringbone pattern, which adds geometric intrigue and a touch of elegance to any room. Parquet floors can be installed using a wide variety of wood species, including oak, walnut, and cherry, which can easily be stained and finished to match your design tastes. Compared to more traditional types of hardwood installations, parquet floors are relatively easy to install, and don’t require any nails. Instead, the individual planks are glued in place, and in some cases, directly on top of pre-existing flooring.
When it comes to maintaining parquet, treat is as you would any other hardwood flooring. Regular sweeping and vacuuming will help remove debris from the floor’s surface, and a damp mop or dust broom can be used for any deeper cleaning. Because parquet has many seams between planks, be careful when arranging furniture and avoid placing heavier items on smaller pieces of wood that could become unglued over time. The use of furniture pads and area rugs will also help protect your floors.
